After having worked as a restaurant manager for seven years,Lucinda Godfrey was laid off in 2013 after the business owner decided to sell the company." Godfrey felt discouraged because she didn't have anything to substantiate her work experience." Although she had many years working in the customer service industry, she felt her restaurant management skills were not considered transferable to many positions available in the Rowan County area." Godfrey also felt she would be overlooked for employment opportunities due to her age." The 60-year-old decided she needed to gain a new marketable skill to add to her work experience and came to the NCWorks Career Center-Rowan in August 2014.
Through the NCWorks Career Center,Godfrey used the WIA Dislocated Worker Program to enroll in a CNA and Nurse Aide I training course through the American Red Cross." The training provided her with the opportunity to enhance her customer service skills and learn new skills to assist her in securing employment.
In November 2014,Godfrey completed all nursing certification courses as one of the top students in her class."" After completing training, she passed the State Board Exam in December 2014 and began actively looking for employment." Although Godfrey became discouraged along the way,she continued to work with the staff at the NCWorks Career Center-Rowan and was determined to reach her goal of finding a new job." She consistently visited the Center in Rowan County and gained all the skills needed for the nursing field that would allow her to continue working and using her background in customer service."
In March 2015,the NCWorks Career Center-Rowan assisted Godfrey in accomplishing her goal. She was hired as a CNA with Genesis Health Care in Salisbury,NC." With the assistance of the WIA Dislocated Worker Program,Godfrey has successfully achieve her goals and is now back to work serving individuals in the Rowan County community.
